At the North East corner of Nathan Phillips Square, bordered by Bay and Hagerman Streets, you will find the Larry Sefton Memorial Park. Larry Sefton was a union organiser and director of District 6 with the United Steelworkers of America for twenty years. Sefton was an inspirational and well-regarded figure, so much so that a lecture series was named in his honour at the University of Toronto’s Woodsworth College Centre for Industrial Relations. He also has a housing cooperative named after him in Scarborough.
Larry Sefton died in 1973, and in 1977 the United Steelworkers of America donated the land for the parkette to the city, as well as a memorial statue in his honour.
